Aberdeen Gardens

Aberdeen HISTORY: Built in the 1930's, Aberdeen Gardens was the first housing division in the district and the first of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal Settlements built by and for African Americans. The neighborhood was established to provide African American shipping workers with modern homes in which to live and garden for sustenance. Each property came with a chicken coop and farming tracks. This is one of the last New Deal communities that is still in existence today.
