Merrimac Shores
Merrimac Shores HISTORY: This neighborhood was named in honor of the Confederate Ironclad that engaged the Union fleet on March 8, 1862 and on the following day, the Union Ironclad the Monitor in the waters adjoining Merrimac Shores. All of the streets are named in honor of the officers and the designers of the Merrimac. Merrimac Shores is part of a 100-acre tract of land first patented by Elizabeth Hawthorne on September 20, 1624. Merrimac Shores as it is today began development in 1946 with the first home built on Chesapeake Avenue in 1949. The Civic Association was chartered in 1954.
