Lillian T. Kline

E-Mail: lkline4@cox.net

  • Ms. Kline brought in pictures of her father, Jeremiah Thomas. He sang with the Hampton Quartet in 1931. The group toured Europe and other places. It was known for performing African-American spirituals, and during this time there were not many African-American quartets. It was formed on the campus of Hampton Institute. They traveled in order to raise funds for the school. The other three members were John H. Wainwright, James A. Bailey, and Winfield E. Creekmur. The quartet sang a total of 70 times in Great Britain.

Ms. Kline got this information from the Hampton University Library.
